Quality Basic Education to Orphans and Vulnerable Children in Afiraca

Why is our school necessary?

In Cameroon, basic education is compulsory and offered for almost free in public schools, but the quality of education is relatively low because the classrooms are overcrowded. It is not unusual for a class to have more than 70 to 90 kids, all of which are being taught by a single teacher. Often, they lack qualified teachers and proper school structures (classrooms, libraries, playgrounds, water points, toilet facilities, etc.).

On the other hand, the government has allowed individuals, churches, and civic organizations to also run basic education schools. The problem lies, however, in the affordability of this kind of education. Exorbitant fees are charged in schools that offer quality basic education.

Understanding that public schools offer free but low-quality education while private schools offer quality education for a fee which is above the reach of ordinary Cameroonians, AFOSMA decided to come up with a middle position, and that is to run a private school that offers quality education free for orphans and underprivileged children and at a fee that’s less than half of what is charged by similar private schools to other kids ($234.00/year).
